The Bates Update January 2014

I’ll keep this one short and sweet. I’m not super busy gigging but parenting and planning for the rest of the year. Writing music, booking, teaching, practicing, exploring collaborative options and prepping for the release of the Good Vibes trio record slated for early spring release on Technecore. The Good Vibe trio is a spectacular ensemble with cagey veterans Phil Hey and Dave Hagedorn. I would say it is the most straight ahead jazz project I’ve ever been involved with. Our repertoire is mostly made up of classics from the giants of jazz – Mingus, Ornette, Coltrane, Monk, Brubeck, Hubbard with a few originals sprinkled throughout. We played last week at Jazz Central and Tim Nyberg painted to our music with the hopes that an album cover would emerge from his brush strokes. It’s looking good so far and I’m very excited for you all to hear this group. I’ll be sure to keep you posted on our next gigs and the pending CD release!
